Chocolate Layer Cake

Ingredients Cake:

•    ½ cup shortening

•    1 ½ cups sugar

•    3 tablespoons cocoa

•    3 eggs

•    2 ¼ cups cake flour, sifted

•    1 teaspoon baking soda

•    1 teaspoon baking powder

•    ½ teaspoon salt

•    1 cup milk

•    1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Ingredients Frosting:

•    ½ cup butter

•    ¼ cup shortening

•    ½ cup cocoa

•    1 teaspoon vanilla extract

•    1 egg

•    3 cups confectioners’ sugar, sifted

•    ¼ cup milk

Instructions Cake:

1.    Preheat the oven to 350F.

2.    Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

3.    In a medium bowl, cream together the shortening and sugar. Cream until light and fluffy.

4.    Mix in the cocoa.

5.    One at a time, blend in the eggs. Beat in until well combined.

6.    In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

7.    In a small bowl, mix, the milk, and vanilla.

8.    Mix 1/3 of the flour mixture into the shortening mixture. Blend well.

9.    Mix in 1/3 of the milk mixture into the shortening mixture. Blend well. Continue until all the flour and all the milk mixtures are blended well together.

10.    Separate the batter equally into the two prepared pans.

11.    Bake for 30 to 35 minutes.

12.    Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then remove from the pans and let cool becomes on a wire rack.

Instruction Frosting:

1.    In a large bowl, cream together the butter, shortening, and cocoa.

2.    Mix in the egg and vanilla. Blend really well.

3.    Add half the sugar and mix well.

4.    Add half the milk and mix well.

5.    Add the remaining sugar and mix well.

6.    Add the remaining milk and mix well.

7.    Beat until combined.
