Cheese Bread

Yield: 4 loaves


  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups bread flour, divided

  • 2 tbsp sugar

  • 1 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1 package active dry yeast

  • 1 cup very warm water (120 to 130 degrees)

  • 2 tbsp margarine, melted

  • 1 cup natural Swiss cheese, shredded

  • 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, grated

  • 1 egg, lightly beaten


  1. Lightly grease three loaf pans.

  2. In a large bowl, mix well together with the yeast, sugar, salt and two cups of the bread flour.

  3. Slowly add the water and margarine. A soft dough will form.

  4. In a medium bowl, combine the cheese. Place 1/4 cup aside for later. Add the cheese (main bowl), egg and one cup of flour into the dough mixture. Mix well.

  5. Place dough on a floured surface and knead for 8 to 10 minutes. Work in the remaining flour. Place in a lightly oiled bowl and lightly brush oil over the dough. Cover and let rest until doubled in size.

  6. Remove from the bowl and knead again. Separate into four equal parts. Create a rectangle out of each piece, cover and let rest for 15 minutes.

  7. Preheat oven to 375F degrees

  8. Roll the dough into a spiral shape and place in loaf pan seam side down. Let rest in a warm place for 50 minutes. It will double in size.

  9. Cut a 1/4 inch deep slice in each loaf and cover in the remaining cheese. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until the loaves become golden brown.

  10. Remove from pans immediately after baking and use a pastry brush with margarine.
