We’re eating like Walt

Eat Like Walt

Hi DisBakers,

I am so excited to talk to you about something today. You guys know I love Disney books. I especially love Disney books that have recipes in them and I have a great one for you today!

One day I was in a major book retailer looking for new Disney recipes books. I don’t usually find any new ones but sometimes I get lucky. Into the search computer kiosk, I typed in “Disney Food” and BAM a new book appeared. I was pretty excited. It was called “Eat Like Walt – The Wonderful World of Disney Food” by Marcy Carriker Smothers. The computer said it wasn’t going to be available for a few months, so I waited. I told my whole family about how excited I was. Over a year later, it appeared on my doorstep.

I want to be upfront about how I finally got the book in my hands. I had originally tried to find it in stores, but they were always sold out. I live internationally, and stores only order a few copies. I then began an adventure with a large bookstore retailer. I ordered the book and was supposed to get it a few weeks later. Well months later, and numerous emails saying my book was shipped, finding out it wasn’t shipped, lost orders, confused customer service agents and just silliness… I didn’t get the book. It should be noted this had nothing to do with Disney, the author, or the actual book. It was an issue with the book retailer. After many months I went into the store for a refund. I was disappointed. I really wanted the book. Since I followed the author on Instagram, I thought she might find my story funny. I wrote out the long version of the tale and sent it to her. I didn’t really expect to hear back but I did. She was incredibly sweet and said she would send me a copy. She didn’t have too but I am very grateful she did. A few weeks later I finally had it in my hands.

Ok, let’s get into it.

“Eat Like Walt” advertises itself as “ a culinary tour of Disneyland’s six distinct lands. Every attraction has a story, and so do many of the menu items.” If you are at all interested in Disneyland you need this book. Besides that fact it’s beautifully laid out, it’s filled with information you just can’t find other places. This book honestly has everything you could want when it comes to Walt Disney and Disney food. Whether it be the food they ate within their family, at the studios, or the restaurants in Disneyland’s districts.

I really liked reading about the restaurants that don’t exist anymore. All too often we think the food services they have now have always been there, but it’s just not true. So many places have come, gone or changed. It’s a real example of how Disneyland is always growing and changing. The book is even filled with the old menus too. I love looking at the prices of the meals. It’s crazy to see a full appetizer, main course, dessert and drink for a $1.50.

If you know someone who isn’t interested in Disney food… (why are you hanging out with them?)… this book is a must-have coffee table book strictly for vintage photos. It’s chock-full of them. Pictures you haven’t see other places. I could flip through this book for hours just looking at the photos. They are awesome.

The very back of the book is filled with Disney Park recipes and some belonging to the Disney family. You know I love recipes around here. For the rest of the week, we are going to be creating some them and showing you how you can too. Any excuse to bake Disney food is good enough for me. After we have created a few, we will sum everything up for you guys. I’ll share what I thought of them, how easy they were to make and how they tie into the book.

We will also be giving a brand new copy away. You can’t have mine, now that I have one, I’m not letting go of it. Each post will share a piece of how to win. Trust me, you want this awesome book. Any Disney fan should make it a must-have. Comment below if you love Disney Cookbook and books about Disney food. (Shh… it’s the requirement from today’s post to be entered into the draw.)

So come along with us as we “Eat Like Walt” this week. It will be a great time. I’m pretty excited.

Tomorrow we are making the Apple Pie from Plaza Inn in Disneyland. Apple pie is just one of those desserts that bring warm memories back. I can’t wait to share it with you.

Love you guys!

  1. This book sounds awesome! I love Disney recipes (probably half of my cookbooks are Disney ones!) so this sounds really cool.

  2. Glad you got a copy finally!!! I actually bought the ample hills dairy recipe book because I love the ice cream on the boardwalk!! I’m so excited about this!

    1. I need to get those. I’m trying to collect the Disney Springs and BoardWalk places cookbook too. 🙂 I’d love to know how the Ample Hills Book is. 🙂
